Giving Back at Feed My Starving Children

If you stop by Feed My Starving Children in Chanhassen, MN on any given day of the workweek during the 10am hour, you may spot several individuals from Opportunity Services labeling bags, packing food or getting to know the FMSC staff. A team of individuals, from the Opportunity Services Community Skills Training Program in Savage, comes to volunteer at Feed My Starving Children for an hour every day of the week. Typically they label food bags with expiration dates and some days they pack bags of food with other volunteers. The team really enjoys their time at Feed My Starving Children and look forward to making a difference for people in need. They have even gone so far as to keep a piggy bank at their site and collect donations to give back to Feed My Starving Children!

In addition to building a great passion for the organization, many of the individuals have improved their quality and speed while putting on labels. Feed My Starving Children provides a wonderful atmosphere to build work and social skills. Every member of the Feed My Starving Children staff greets the OS team when they arrive. None is more welcoming than Bob, a Volunteer Program Facilitator, pictured above with the team. No one can exactly remember how or when, but one day someone from OS gave Bob a nickname and now the whole OS team and several staff from FMSC have catchy and fun nicknames. “We have many kinds of people that come to volunteer at Feed My Starving Children,” says Bob. “It’s the full spectrum of society, from corporate groups to school field trips- everyone is welcome here.” It’s this kind of environment where the individuals we serve at Opportunity Services can flourish and build social skills to utilize in everyday life.

The Opportunity Services team has volunteered at Feed My Starving Children for about 3 years now, at both the Chanhassen and Eagan locations. It’s a wonderful organization doing amazing things: Feed My Starving Children produced over 333 million meals in their last fiscal year alone and has close to 1.2 million volunteers across the US. We are thrilled to play a small role in the beneficial work they do! Our group looks forward to coming in every day and giving back to those in need.
