The ADA gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. The ADA also ensures equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities for access to businesses, employment, transportation, state and local government programs and services. People with disabilities are now welcomed into society and the workplace, in opportunities that were unheard of before the ADA.

Opportunity Services, a local nonprofit that helps adults with disabilities find meaningful employment in the community; will be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act ADA by sharing local success stories in Minnesota, Florida and Massachusetts. This summer an Opportunity Services work team started to work at a brand-new job site: the City of Blaine. The City of Blaine work team consists of four clients from the Anoka County Opportunity Services location and one job coach: Melissa Hodge. The clients are enjoying working outside this summer as many of our jobs are indoors during the colder months in Minnesota. With the assistance of Melissa, the OS work team is on-site Monday-Friday cleaning the bathrooms around the parks. Everyone on the team says the work is fun, especially when they’re cleaning by the beach!

Opportunity Services creates beneficial partnerships with local businesses around Minnesota, fulfilling both the needs of the clients and businesses. Marc Shippee, Parks Department Supervisor for the City of Blaine is glad to have the positive energy of the work team. “The OS work team is doing a great job and I’ve received no complaints from local residents. They have fulfilled our business need for the summer and we hope this partnership can continue in the future.”

The successful partnership between Opportunity Services and the City of Blaine is a great example of the Americans with Disabilities Act in motion! By fulfilling the clients and business need, Opportunity Services can help clients make their dream of working in the community a reality.
