Opportunity Services at the Golfer’s Choice Tournament!

July 20, 2017– Opportunity Services, a local nonprofit that helps adults with disabilities find employment, will be celebrating their 12th year of participation in the Golfer’s Choice Golf Tournament at the Somerby Golf Club benefitting The Arc Southeastern Minnesota in Byron, Minnesota on Monday, July 31st. Opportunity Services clients will be greeting and assisting tournament participants at one of the golf tournament holes following the shotgun start at 11:30am. Two individuals are highlighted below and would be happy to speak with media for interviews before or after the golf tournament about this exciting opportunity to give back to the community by supporting The Arc!

Meet Jennifer, an individual who works with Opportunity Services in Rochester. About 8 years ago, while battling with Multiple Sclerosis, Jennifer lost her eyesight. At first she was very afraid to lose one of her senses and felt a great loss of independence. She started volunteering at the Rochester Restore once a week to get out of the house. It was there she gained her confidence again and was finally willing to find a job of her own!

Before Jennifer lost her eyesight, she worked in the hospitality industry and was a hairstylist, where using her eyesight was essential to making her customers look good at the end of every appointment! Not having her eyesight on-the-job was a barrier, but one that Jennifer was ready to overcome. Jennifer started to learn how to work using only touch. She utilized other assistive technologies as well including applications for her iPad and mastered the art of using a cane.

Jennifer has now been successful on-the-job at the Kmart in downtown Rochester for over 2 years! She currently works 3 days a week but would love to work even more. She‘s in charge of maintaining the apparel on the floor and keeps all of the clothes looking good throughout the store. “Sometimes you just gotta laugh,” said Jennifer. “It was an entirely new world for me after I lost my sight, but I’m continuing to move forward every day.” With the help of her amazing team and local supports, Jennifer is finding great success in the Rochester community!

Meet Walter- he’s been successful on the job at Walmart North in Rochester for over two years! He does many different things while working, but he is typically outside arranging carts and helping customers to their cars. Everyone at Walmart knows Walter as a “jack of all trades!” He always has an upbeat and positive attitude, both of which really add to the team environment.

Walter enjoys his independence and looks forward to coming to work to see his regular customers. He also likes making money and being able to support himself! “Before I started working with Opportunity Services, I was afraid,” says Walter. “Now that fear is gone. I’m much more talkative and willing to ask questions at work.” In the future, Walter would like to become a bus driver in Rochester. He just got his permit after working hard, and is on the way to getting his license! In his free time, Walter likes to visit with his mom, play basketball and watch movies- scary movies are his favorite! We applaud your continued employment success, Walter!
